Ask what a divan bed is and most people will describe the bed they grew up on without ever using the word. It is the standard British bed: a fabric-covered base with a mattress on top, and usually drawers built into the side. Simple enough — until the listings start throwing platform top, sprung edge, ottoman and continental drawers at you.

So here is the plain version. What a divan bed is made of, how it compares with an ottoman and a wooden frame, the UK sizes, and the floor space each needs. We sell all three at Millburn Road in Inverness, and we will be straight about where each wins.

What is a divan bed made of?

A divan is a two-part bed. Underneath is the base: a timber frame upholstered in fabric, on castors or glides. On top sits the mattress, bought separately in most cases. The headboard is a third piece, bolted on at the back.

That construction is why divans became the UK's default bed. No slats to crack, the mattress supported evenly across its whole underside, and the storage built into the furniture rather than a plastic box pushed underneath.

It matters on delivery day too. In double size and above, a divan base comes as two halves joined by linking bars — for a 135cm double, each piece is under 70cm wide. Anyone who has fought a rigid base round a Victorian stairwell will see the appeal.

Platform top or sprung edge: what is the difference?

This is the choice that changes how the bed feels, and the one most people skip.

• Platform top. A solid, firm deck under the fabric. The mattress feels exactly as firm as it is, sometimes slightly firmer, and it is usually the more affordable base.
• Sprung edge. Springs built into the base itself, working with the mattress rather than under it. Softer and more forgiving overall, and the base absorbs some of the nightly load.

What storage do you get with a divan bed?

Divan storage comes in four configurations. Which suits you depends less on how much you want to store than on the clear floor beside the bed.

• No drawers. The cheapest base, and the right answer if the bed sits between fitted wardrobes where nothing could open anyway.
• 2 drawers. Both on one side, or one on each. Ideal when one side is against a wall.
• 4 drawers. Two on each side: the most storage, and the most clear floor needed.
• Continental drawers. Four smaller, shallower drawers set toward the head end. Being shorter, they clear a bedside cabinet at the top corner — exactly the problem full-length drawers create.

The test is simple: leave roughly 60cm of clear floor beside the bed so a drawer opens fully. Measure before you choose — a bedside cabinet or a radiator in the drawer's path is the usual culprit.

Divan vs ottoman: when does lift-up storage win?

An ottoman takes a different approach. The whole mattress platform lifts on gas struts, so the storage is the full footprint of the bed — the largest space most bedrooms have going spare. A side-lift needs clearance along the side, an end-lift at the foot, so work out which way your bed can open before choosing a model.

When an ottoman beats drawers

• There is no 60cm of clear floor at either side — small room, fitted wardrobes, bedside tables in the way.
• You are storing bulky, occasional things: spare duvets, suitcases, Christmas boxes.

The honest trade-offs

• You must clear the bed before opening it, so it is storage for twice a year, not tomorrow's jumper.
• A heavy mattress makes the lift harder; struts are rated to a weight range. [CHECK: strut ratings for current models]

Drawers are for the things you use. An ottoman is for the things you keep.

When is a wooden bed frame the better choice?

Neither divan nor ottoman is the answer if what you want is to see the timber. A solid oak frame reads as furniture in a way an upholstered base does not, and it matches an oak chest, bedsides and wardrobe — the case our piece on why solid oak outlasts flat-pack makes at length. A slatted base also leaves the mattress open underneath, which suits anyone who sleeps warm. The trade: no built-in storage, more parts on assembly day, and slats that occasionally announce themselves at three in the morning.

What size bed will actually fit your room?

UK bed sizes are standard, so the mattress is the easy part:

• Single — 90 x 190cm
• Small double — 120 x 190cm
• Double — 135 x 190cm
• King — 150 x 200cm
• Super king — 180 x 200cm

The room is harder, and this is where the add-10cm rule earns its keep. Add roughly 10cm to the mattress width and length for the base and headboard, then allow about 70cm of clear floor on every side you walk down.

Tape the footprint out on the bedroom floor first. It takes ten minutes, and it has talked more than one customer out of a super king and into a very happy king.

Strutted or floor-standing headboards

A strutted headboard bolts onto two struts at the back of the base, adjusts for height and moves with the bed. A floor-standing one runs legs to the floor — taller, heavier, and it needs to clear your skirting board.
